Pattern Recognition

A decade of digital change has made ‘metamorphosis’ a keyword in our visual culture. The forms produced by mechanical technologies are fixed, stable and solid; those produced by electronic technologies are evanescent and mercurial. They change and morph relentlessly – sometimes by choice, sometimes by chance. This epistemic difference between forms of the mechanical universe and forms of the digital universe is inherent in the two technologies: the mechanical world produces objects; the electronic world produces sequences of numbers, which in turn generate objects.

MATSYS

Established in 2004 by Andrew Kudless, Matsys is a design studio that explores the emergent relationships between architecture, engineering, biology, and computation. Based on the idea that architecture can be understood as a material body with its own intrinsic and extrinsic forces relating to form, growth, and behavior, the studio investigates methodologies of performative integration through geometricand material differentiation. The studio’s work ranges from speculative and built projects to the crafting of new tools which facilitate an interdisciplinary approach to the design and fabrication of architecture.

CAAD Futures 2009 Montreal: Parametric Workshops June 15th + 16th | SmartGeometry

The increased availability of parametric tools for building design offers new opportunities in the design process. It lets design teams generate and explore design alternatives and variations, provides designers with high levels of responsiveness to changing project conditions, and lets project teams experiment with innovative approaches to inter-disciplinary collaboration throughout project design and delivery.

SmartGeometry

Geometry is one of many systems which are amenable to modeling. Architectural design as a process should, we maintain, exploit the new potential available in computing. To the new generations of architects mathematics and algorithms are becoming as natural as pen and pencil.

The activities of the SmartGeometry Group promote the emergence of a new generation of digital designers and craftsmen, who are able to expolit the combination of digital and physical media. The group’s  interests range from parametric design and scripting to digital manufacturing.

The Digital Design Ecosystem:Toward a Pre-Rational Architecture

French social caricaturists in the mid-nineteenth century portray prevailing public opinion of doctors as ‘quacks,’ medicine as ‘quackery.’ Architects are equally derided for their intuitive methods. Doctors took such criticism seriously and responded with concerted effort to engender trust. They surpassed their architectural counterparts at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris and, two-hundred years hence, have become regarded as providers of services critical to preserving public health, safety, and welfare. Architects never challenged such authority – arguing, perhaps, that an improper handling of the scalpel might entail consequences comparable to brick or steel. ____________________________

Technologically-driven form-finding is not an attempt to pre-configure or automate design. A pushbutton, one-size-fits-all approach holds no quarter. Performative feedback is intended to increase the amount of design information available to architects, not decide for them. The Digital Design Ecosystem will necessitate training architecture students to calibrate and test the tools they are employing, in order to fully understand and validate the results being generated – as medical interns have done for years. Architectural licensure can then be governed by substantial hands-on practice, with expertise derived from implementation of fundamental design principals and metrics.

Parametric Waste Container |Publication in Archithese

April’s 2006 issue Archithese CAAD CAAO, focuses on digital technologies and its influence on architecture’s contemporary discourse and practice,  the article about the adaptable waste container explains the full associativeness of its design and the possibilities that this opens for design with CAD-CAM software for Mass Customization.
